I have known Huseyin since the days before he created Sofra. I worked in a large hotel in the Mayfair area and my colleagues and I used to visit his place often, to eat, as our staff food was awful. I was around when he took over the place he worked in when his boss left and which he turned into the first Sofra. He then took over the next door space when the owner left to go back to Spain. When the builders were in there they found another space in the basement which had been boarded up years previously and which had been used in Victorian days as a Coal Hole. The coal would have been slid down a hatch accessed from the road outside in these days. In fact there was still a large amount of coal left there which had to be cleared. Huseyin was so pleased to find this extra space, which meant that the kitchen and toilet and of course more tables could be housed downstairs, to free up all of the ground floor level for seating. We got to know Huseyin very well during that time and got to know that nothing but perfection was acceptable, from his food suppliers, butchers and from his ever increasing staff.
At the beginning there was no liquer licence, but the word had got around that the food was well worth trying. The lack of licence did not not stop people queueing up, either just outside, or across the road in the pub, where Huseyin would personally go and inform the customers that a table was ready. It was worth the wait, even in those days, and up to this day, people are still happy to wait for a table!
It has been very interesting for me to witness his meteoric rise but with absolutely no surprise.
Well done for all the accolades Huseyin!

We discovered your delightful restaurant in London during our first few days in London while exploring the city.
The food was so amazing that we returned several times during our 3 week visit to the UK.
We invited our friends to join us for dinner while we were there and they were equally impressed with your kind and efficient staff, healthy delicious food and impressive menu.
We will always hold a memory of Sofra in our hearts as the best Turkish food we have ever tasted and look forward to experiencing all of your restaurants during our next visit.
Thank you!
